How can we use design to re-think our relationship with the environment? And how we can approach democracy with design. This was explored in group during a 1 week course at Umeå Institute of Design 2011.
The final project had an agonistic democracy exploration where we wanted to evoke peoples’ emotions.
After reading some scientific reports, our focus lay on making people aware of and understand that snow is highly polluted due to our way of living. We prototyped a metaphor to visualize at the snow bar at school the same evening.
The guests were served with shots in covered ice glasses and a box with salt. They had two choices:
1. Followed the nature’s process and wait until the lid melted.
2. As we do on roads today and put salt on it to shorten the time but get a bitter affect.
Complex data can easy be made tangible for an audience.
And democracy can be approached by using the design process and start discussions and motivate people.
